PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - The Rhode Island Supreme Court has upheld the conviction of a man found guilty in the beating death of a Providence toddler.
Akeem King was convicted of second-degree murder in 2006 for the the death of two-year old Marquel Davis. The toddler was found dead in the Erastus Street apartment of Troy Figgs in August of 2005. Prosecutors say Davis' mother left him in King and Figgs' care by his mother, while she went to work as a prostitute in Boston.
Figgs pleaded guilty to second degree murder in 2007, and was sentenced to 60 years in prison.
King appealed his conviction to the Supreme Court, arguing an interview he had with Providence police should have been suppressed. He said the interview was conducted before he had a chance to appear in court.
