PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - According to the terms of an arbitration award, Providence firefighters are expected to receive long-awaited retroactive raises.

Providence Mayor David Cicilline and the Firefighters' Union have been locked in a bitter contract dispute for several years.

Mayor Cicilline says firefighters will receive a 2.5% pay raise retroactive to January 2006. They are also entitled to a 3.5% pay increase effective from January 1, 2007.

Mayor Cicilline and Firefighters' Union President Paul Doughty say they are still working out the remaining contract years.
