Providence City Councilors angrily criticized the Mayor's office Thursday night for its implementation of the new recycling policy , which has resulted in uncollected trash around the city.

"I'm disgusted at this point," said City Councilor Josephine DiRuzzio. "Next week is Thanksgiving; are we going to have garbage all over the streets for a third week?"

Under the new policy, residents have to put out recycling bins, or their garbage won't be picked up. However, many residents say they have followed the rules, and their garbage still hasn't been collected .

City Councilors said Thursday residents did not receive enough notice about the policy change. Councilor John Lombardi also criticized the Mayor's office for its decision to give out the information electronically

"There are a lot of residents who do not have e-mail, do not have computers, do not know what Youtube is," Lombardi said. "In my neighborhood there's many people that when you ask them what Youtube is, say it's in their television."

Environmental advocates were also present at Thursday night's meeting, urging that the city continue the program despite the hiccups.

"It's been in the public conservation a lot this week, and I think it's going to get better in the next week or two," said Sheila Dormody.

The issue was referred to a Public Works meeting, which is scheduled for Tuesday night.
