PROVIDENCE, R.I., (WPRI) - It's against the law in Rhode Island to text while you drive.

And if you break the law, police will nab you!

According to the Providence Journal, state and local police issued at least 17 tickets to drivers who were texting while driving.

The ban went into effect about 3-months ago.

The violation is punishable by a fine of $85 for the first offense, $100 for the second and $135 for a third offense.
