PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) - Officials in Pawtucket reveal plans to overhaul a city bridge.
The new construction project will rebuild the Pawtucket River bridge and will take two to three years to complete.
Construction crews are currently working to repair the old bridge and officials have imposed a weight limit on the structure, fining trucks exceeding the limit for crossing the bridge. The restrictions have forced the trucks to drive through Pawtucket's city streets but the new bridge project is expected to help alleviate traffic issues.
Officials say the current bridge is safe but that the weight restrictions were put into place to avoid further deterioration until the new bridge is built.
The new bridge construction is set to begin sometime before this summer.
