NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WPRI) -- While many residents are worrying about making sure that Thanksgiving dinner is ready, some local shoppers are already gearing up for Black Friday.
One shopper was sitting outside of the Walmart in North Smithfield, and says he has been there since Tuesday afternoon.
Michael Mayette wants to make sure that he is the first in the store for those Black Friday deals. "I'm actually out to get my mom an early Christmas gift," he said.
While Michael waits outside in order to get the perfect present, family members stop by and hold his spot so he can take a break for a few minutes, and drop off food.
Michael admits it is chilly out but has done his best to prepare, "My toes are a little nippy, but besides that, the rest of my body is nice and warm. I got six layers of clothes on, two blankets, two coats on and I'm nice and cozy."
Across the area, many retailers are getting ready for the busiest shopping day of the year. While some stores in other states can open on Thanksgiving, " Blue Laws " in Rhode Island and Massachusetts prevent retailers from operating on holidays.
"They should observe the holiday. Family comes first before shopping," said Warren resident Natalie Mota.
Micheal says though, that the wait outside for a good deal inside is all part of the holiday fun. His family plans to wait to celebrate Thanksgiving on Friday, after he buys his Christmas presents.
