Snow & ice make for messy commute

Northwest R.I. expected to get 2 to 5 inches

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – Several inches of snow and slush made for a challenging commute Wednesday morning, forcing many schools and businesses to delay the start of the day.

The slick road conditions has RIPTA buses running behind schedule. Passengers are being told to expect a 10-20 minute delay on all bus routes.

Eyewitness News Meteorologist Pete Mangione says snow will slowly changeover to sleet and rain throughout the morning. Those living in the north and west of Providence are expected to see 2-5 inches and 1-3 inches of snow will fall along I-95 including Providence.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for parts of our area until 3 p.m.

In Cumberland, there was already several inches of snow by 6 a.m. Residents say this is nothing new.

"They are ready. They are always ready. You get used to it. Around this area they've been used to it for years. It's been happening since before I was born," Cory Krause told Eyewitness News.

Drivers are reminded to use extra caution on the roadways with the chance of freezing rain later this morning and a light drizzle in the afternoon.
