SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WPRI) - Students in Smithfield organized their own unsanctioned pep rally today, after school officials canceled a planned rally at Smithfield High School.

During the course of spirit week, school officials tell Eyewitness News, they were warned of plans by some students disrupt the rally.

The original rally was scheduled to take place in the gym, but this morning dozens of students gathered in the sports field on their own.

School officials say the students were respectful, and there's no word if they'll face punishment.
