Changes lead to more recycling in RI

7.5 percent more recycling reported this year

JOHNSTON, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Islanders are recycling more, and officials are crediting the recent change to a single-stream program.

Sarah Kite, who directs the recycling program for the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corp., tells the Providence Journal that their plant processed an average of 400 tons of recyclable material per day in July. That's 7.5 percent more than in the same month a year ago.

Kite says the increase is the direct result of Resource Recovery's efforts to make it easier to recycle.

Residents no longer have to sort recyclables a curbside. Since June that has been done at new machines inside the recycling plant.
