SMITHFIELD, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island transportation officials say an 80-year-old bridge in Smithfield will soon reopen early following a successful reconstruction project.
The Department of Transportation announced Friday that the Stillwater Viaduct will reopen Wednesday, about five weeks ahead of schedule.
The 450-foot-long viaduct carries Route 116 over the Stillwater Reservoir. It was closed in March for $9.4 million in repairs.
The construction contractor used a new construction technique using pre-made components to complete the work more quickly than if traditional techniques were used.
The project involved replacing the bridge's superstructure and repairing the bridge's concrete arches.
U.S. Sen. Jack Reed and town officials toured the renovated bridge on Friday afternoon.
