JOHNSTON, R.I. (WPRI) – A local animal hospital is caring for a young and injured bald eagle that was found at the Central Landfill in Johnston on Tuesday.

Veterinarians in Wickford discovered on Thursday that the bald eagle had been shot and was likely fighting for its life during this past weekend’s blizzard.

Veterinarians believe the bald eagle is female and say it’s too weak to do a full examination.

Doctors are doing their best to try and nurse the nation’s symbol of freedom back to health.

The Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act protects the animals. The penalty for violating the act is a $250,000 fine and up to two years in prison.

The Department of Environmental Management is handling the investigation.
