EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I.  (WPRI) -- A Foster native has taken command of a Coast Guard cutter in Alabama.

Lieutenant j.g. Christopher Marquis assumed command of the cutter Stingray during a change-of-command ceremony at a Coast Guard station in Mobile Friday.

The Stingray is an 87-foot patrol boat homeported in Mobile, Alabama, and has a crew of 12.  The cutter's area of operations stretches from Carrabelle, Florida, to the Chandeleur Islands off New Orleans.

Marquis graduated the US Coast Guard Academy in 2010 and previously served as the weapons officer and first lieutenant aboard the USCG Albert, homeported in Astoria, Oregon.
