FOSTER, R.I. (WPRI) - One man was injured in a fire that broke out inside a barn on New Year's Day.

Firefighters from seven departments were called to the scene on Danielson Pike around 3 p.m. Tuesday.

"We have to call in that many departments because we need the water supply," said Chief Gordon Brayton of the South Foster Volunteer Fire Company.

Janet Brayton, who lives across the street, called 911.

"There were flames coming up behind the building, and the smoke was rolling over the building and coming out the windows," Janet Brayton said.

Investigators say an elderly man was taken to the hospital after suffering minor burns.

"Apparently, he was trying to pull stuff out from inside and slightly singed his face," Chief Brayton said, "We transported him to Rhode Island Hospital. He should be okay."

Crews are still searching for what caused the fire.
