SMITHFIELD R.I. (WPRI) - The 12-year-old girl from Guatemala who was struck and killed by a car on Sunday has been identified as Daniela Heredia.

Daniela was attending a Challenge camp at Mater Ecclesiae College in Greenville. She and seven other girls were walking down the sidewalk of route 44 to Smithfield to do some shopping with the accident occurred.

Her parents arrived in Rhode Island from Guatemala early this morning, and they are planning on participating in a special memorial mass for their daughter that will be held tonight.

Smithfield Police states they have not charged the 80-year-old driver, but they will be asking the department of motor vehicles to revoke the man’s license.

The two other girls who were involved in the accident were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, and were released last night.

Camp director and Regnum Christi consecrated woman Rene Pomarico says they are waiting for the arrival of her family.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to them. We ask all Regnum Christi members to keep Daniela and her family, all the girls who were involved, and the driver of the car, in your prayers”

The time and location of the vigil has not been announced.
