BURRILLVILLE, R.I. (AP) -- Burrillville officials say police will be in town schools each day as a precaution.
The Call of Woonsocket reports that Town Manager and Public Safety Director Michael C. Wood informed students and their parents and school employees that the decision is precautionary and not a response to any questionable information or threat.
School officials said Friday that the police presence will remain until School Superintendent Frank Pallotta establishes a group to evaluate safety and review proposed improvements.
Assigning police to the schools came two weeks after a gunman shot and killed 20 children and six educators at a Connecticut elementary school.
Earlier this year, the Town Council and School Department assigned an officer to the schools when police are available. Parents, teachers and members of the Burrillville Anti-Bullying Task Force demanded action.
