PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A suspect in a fatal stabbing in Smithfield has admitted that authorities have sufficient proof to presume that he committed the crime.

But a spokesman for Attorney General Patrick Lynch warns that the statement does not rise to the level of a confession.

Eighteen-year-old Aaron Menard of Burrillville was ordered held without bail at a hearing in district court on Thursday on a charge of murder in connection with the August stabbing death of 26-year-old Kenneth Wanamaker of Smithfield.

Authorities have said Wanamaker once dated Menard's girlfriend.

A judge gave prosecutors until Nov. 18 to get a grand jury indictment, something they are "confident" they can do.
