NEW YORK (AP/WPRI) - A young woman who attended Brown University is credited with pushing her friend out of a car's path in New York before she was critically injured herself.

Fidel Guerrero, of Pharr, Texas, tells the New York Daily News that Erinn Phelan, 22, saved his daughter, Alma.

Police are searching for the driver, who fled after the accident early Sunday in Brooklyn.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg identified the owner of the car as Cindi Jasmin. Police said detectives have staked out her home, but Jasmin's family has been uncooperative in the investigation.

Phelan grew up in suburban Boston. She is one of six coordinators for an agency that promotes volunteerism called NYC Service .

Alma Guerrero is in stable condition. She's a medical student at Brown University.

The women were former roommates at Brown.

Brown University President Ruth J. Simmons released the following statement:

"The Brown community is profoundly saddened by this tragedy. We embrace Erinn and Alma's families and offer them our heartfelt concern and offers of assistance during this painful and challenging time."
