WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WPRI) - Woonsocket Mayor Susan Menard announced Monday she will not seek an eighth term in office.
Menard has hinted at ending her political career in years past, specifically 2005 and in 2008, but she always returned.
This time her decision could be final. Those who know Menard personally say her daughter's recent death has taken a toll on her and that in recent years her enthusiasm for politics has declined.
Menard released a statement saying, "I have always known that the time would come for another to take over the leadership role, and I believe that time is now".
Tuesday marks the deadline for other mayoral candidates to file their paperwork to officially enter the Woonsocket race. As of Tuesday morning, four candidates had filed for the race.
