WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WPRI) - The chief judge of Rhode Island's Family Court has asked the Woonsocket Police Department to investigate allegations some of its officers beat up a teenage suspect.
Judge Jeremiah S. Jeremiah said the 16-year-old appeared in his courtroom Wednesday morning with a black eye, bruises on his arm, and a footprint on his back. The teen claimed the officers shot him with a stun gun and assaulted him in a park, and later at police headquarters.
The teen reportedly escaped from a state-run probationary program. He admitted he gave police a false name and tried to run away.
Woonsocket Police Chief Thomas Carey has told Judge Jeremiah internal affairs will investigate.
The Providence Journal reports the teen has been charged with
resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer.
