CHARLESTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) - Thursday's winter storm brought more than bone chilling temperatures and three inches of snow to Charlestown. During the height of the storm, on one of the coldest days of the year, a 24-year-old woman gave birth inside her car in the Town Hall parking lot.
JoAnn Santos the town tax collector, Jodi LaCroix the town clerk, and Lyndsay Shader of Parks and Recreation, quickly ran to the aid of the pregnant woman. The three women grabbed a first aid kit, blankets and coats to help Katherine Higbee of Wyoming, Rhode Island, bring her second child into the world.
Charlestown police said Higbee's mother was driving her to South County Hospital when her labor pains quickly turned in to active labor. With no time to waste, that's when they pulled into the Town Hall parking lot, and Higbee delivered a baby girl in the front seat of the car.
Soon after the Town Hall staff sprang into action, emergency officials arrived and took both Higbee and her new baby to the hospital. Eyewitness News has learned both mother and baby are now resting comfortably in the maternity unit.
