Market using sanitized grocery carts

Experts: solution kills e-coli, salmonella & flu

WESTPORT, Mass., (WPRI) - H1N1 vaccination clinics have been held at 16 more schools across Rhode Island, as the state continues making sure children are getting immunized, as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, the mantra from the health department continues to be, "prepare, don't panic."

We're in the habit of swabbing down almost everything we touch. But how about those surfaces that almost everyone touches? Like grocery carts?

Lee's Market in Westport is taking a different approach to keeping your cart clean. It's called the "pure cart system" and after getting sprayed down, two minutes later, the carts are sanitized, dry, and no longer a breeding ground for all those germs.

Experts say the pure cart is 99.9% effective at killing e-coli bacteria. Customers say they are grateful.

"I think it's great because a lot of people ignore wiping their hands and things,” said Kay Miller.

"I think it's a great idea actually, given everything that's going on and all the sickness and all the spread of the viruses," said Simonne Conlon.

The cleaning solution is safe for humans and the environment. Yet it's still strong enough to kill e-coli, salmonella, and the flu virus.
