WARWICK, R.I. (AP) - The West Warwick schools have lost a lawsuit that sought additional funding from the town.
Superior Court Judge Stephen Nugent on Wednesday dismissed the schools's lawsuit. Rhode Island law permits school districts to sue municipalities if they feel they've been shortchanged financially.
The lawsuit sought an extra $3.3 million from cash-strapped West Warwick. The Providence Journal reports that Nugent said the school committee never submitted a corrective plan to the town after realizing it had a steep shortfall, as state law requires.
He said school officials never even tried to balance their
fiscal 2009 budget. A lawyer for the school committee says she
plans to appeal.
