Severe thunderstorms that rolled through southern New England Wednesday morning caused damage to several homes in the area.
One home on Parkside Drive in West Greenwich was hit by lightning shortly after 6:30 a.m. Fire crews on scene reported an odor of smoke in the attic, but there was no visible fire and the damage appeared to be minor.
Another house was also struck by lightning on the the Ashaway, North Stonington, Conn. line.
According to David Graves from National Grid, a total of 1,800 customers were without power as of 2 p.m. Wednesday, 620 of those are in Cranston, 245 in Warwick, 100 in Westerly and 100 in Narragansett.
According to Eyewitness News Meteorologist Michelle Muscatello , scattered thunderstorms, which will be strong to severe, will continue to develop over the region throughout Wednesday. Damaging wind gusts and hail are the biggest threats with these storms, however, she said torrential downpours and frequent lightning are also likely.
