PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A bankrupt dog track and slot parlor in Lincoln remains uncertain about the future of greyhound racing.
Twin River owner UTGR filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last month while struggling to repay a half-billion dollars in debt. At the time, the racetrack owner said it wanted to end dog racing, which loses more than $10 million annually.
State lawmakers reacted by hurriedly passing legislation forcing the racetrack to offer 200 days of racing instead of 125. Gov. Don Carcieri has vetoed the bill, but lawmakers expect to override the veto.
Stephen Hessler, an attorney for UTGR’s owners, dodged a
question Tuesday from a U.S. bankruptcy judge who asked about
greyhound racing. Hessler said the issue will be addressed later.
