A hazmat scare at the Rhode Island Air National Guard Base at Quonset in North Kingstown Wednesday morning.

A suspicious package was mailed to the base causing it to go on high alert.

Lieutenant Colonel Bruce Fletcher says the “threat-working” group was activated and the building was evacuated.

Hazmat crews from North Kingstown and Warwick arrived at the scene as well as the Health Department and the F.B.I.

Preliminary reports indicate the letter-sized package, thicker than a typical envelope, did not contain anything dangerous.

Eyewitness News has learned the contents were similar to what has been sent to other bases across the country.
