WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) - Bankruptcy court records in three New England states show at least a dozen victims and families of those killed in the 2003 Station Nightclub fire have filed for bankruptcy protection while awaiting their shares of a $176 million settlement.
Court records in Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts show some victims lost their homes or vehicles. According to those records, those who recovered from their injuries were laid off after returning to work.
A federal magistrate judge approved a proposal in March to distribute the $176 million settlement among more than 300 people who filed lawsuits. Lawyers said their clients could receive payments ranging from about $20,000 to several million dollars.
One hundred people died in the Station nightclub fire in West Warwick on Feb. 20, 2003. Hundreds more were injured in the fire, which started when pyrotechnics used by the band Great White ignited soundproofing foam.
