SOMERSET, Mass. (WPRI) - Police said Tuesday a two-year-old girl severely injured her foot after it slid under a lawn mower.

The accident happened Monday afternoon at 11 William J. Higgins Road.  Police said the husband of the woman babysitting the little girl was mowing the lawn when the child ran towards the mower.

Police said the driver tried to swerve to avoid the toddler, but the girl ran in the same direction and caught her foot under the mower.  The girl was rushed to Hasbro Children's Hospital where she underwent emergency surgery.

The Herald News reports that surgeons have amputated the girl's foot.

Police said the child remains at Hasbro.  They said they are not releasing the names of the toddler or the lawn mower driver.
