PROVIDENCE R.I. (WPRI) - North Providence is the latest Rhode Island community to cancel their fireworks displays due to budget constraints.

The display, which had been scheduled for July 3rd at Gov. Notte Park, was cancelled due to the town's budget.

Mayor Charles Lombardi estimates that cancelling the fireworks display will save the town $18,000.

This latest cancellation adds to the number of RI communities cancelling their fireworks displays this year.

Cranston, the third largest city in the state, also cancelled their display to try and save money.

A spokesperson for Mayor Allan Fung stated that there are a number of reasons such as overall cost, spending money on more worthy ventures and private organizations holding fireworks displays for the public that led to the decision to cancel the fireworks this year.
