PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Could the flu scare keep you from shaking hands or taking communion? So what is the diocese of Providence is telling parishioners.
In response to the growing concern over swine flu, the U.S. Bishops committee is releasing these guidelines to help alleviate any concerns about spreading the disease.
Rhode Islands Catholic Churches are taking extra steps to address parishioners’ fears of spreading swine flu at weekend masses. The Providence Diocese is sending recommendations to all parishes, helping to minimize any risk
The U.S. Bishops committee on divine worship posted the guidelines earlier today. Among the recommendations for ministers of Holy Communion:
- Wash hands or use antibacterial before and after handing out
communion.
- Advise ill or sick parishioners against taking from the
cup.
- Monitor pastoral response and attendance this weekend for
any notable changes.
The U.S. Bishops committee is also allowing any areas where the outbreak of the illness is most significant to suspend the exchange of the sign of the peace. The Providence Diocese has no plan to suspend that liturgy practice for now but any pastor with concerns can choose to stop parishioners from shaking hands if they desire.
Parishes across the country are taking action including Texas where churches are prepared for limited attendance this weekend.
The Catholic Church took similar steps in 2006 in response to
the avian flu
