EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - The Northeast Gas Association is raising public awareness on how to report gas leaks. A gas leak is usually recognized by smell, sight, or sound.
Should you suspect a leak, the association recommends doing the following:
- MOVE to a safe environment.
-CALL your Local Distribution Company immediately
-DO NOT light a match, use a phone, switch on/off appliances, lights, or even a flashlight in the area where you smell gas. These items can produce sparks that might ignite the gas and cause an explosion.
-DO NOT assume someone else will report the condition.
-Provide the exact location, including cross streets
-Let your local gas company know if sewer construction or digging activities are going on in the area.
Rhode Island residents should call National Grid if they suspect a gas leak. Customers living in Massachusetts can contact New England Gas.
A deadly house explosion in Somerset killed a 64-year-old woman
