PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - A Providence man trying to grow medical marijuana ended up setting fire to his Spokane Street home, according to police.
Kurtis L. Thomas, 26, is listed with the Rhode Island Department of Health as a medical marijuana patient and caregiver, and by law he is allowed to have 24 marijuana plants.
However, Thomas was using high-intensity lamps to grow the drugs which, according to police, are too strong. Instead, they said Thomas nearly burned down his home Monday.
In addition, he may face narcotics charges since investigators say they found steroids inside the house.
Lawmakers approved the use of medical marijuana in 2006. Just last month, they approved a bill that will allow so-called compassion centers to sell the drug to chronically ill patients.
