PROVIDENCE - In a scene similar to a Red Sox World Series win or Patriots Super Bowl victory, supporters of President-elect Barack Obama spilled out into the streets of Providence Tuesday night, in celebration of the Democrat's win over Republican candidate, Sen. John McCain.
"This is the first time my heart, my soul, my thougts, my everyday actions are actually into it and it feels real," said Obama supporter Michaelle Saintil. "It's like a real election and not some staged thing that is happening."
Obama made history on Nov. 4, 2008 by becoming the first African-American to hold the country's Commander in Chief position. A historic moment that resonated with the dozens of people watching his victory speech on a big screen television at T he Providence Black Repertory Company on Westminster St.
"This means that my children that I am raising in this world have an example of the fact that they can do and be anything they want to be," said Donald King, Black Repertory Company.
Angel Quinonez of Pawtucket said, "I truly believe the American dream is truly attainable. You know, that line has been blurred and I'm beside myself."
"It's the most optimistic moment in my life," said Umberto Crenka, AS220 Artistic Director. "Everything he said in his speech is everything I hoped to hear."
