PROVIDENCE, RI (WPRI) - Providence saw quite a bit of street flooding Saturday night, with DOT workers out in force unclogging drains. The wind is also being blamed for problems ranging from traffic congestion to building damage.
Flooding forced the Route 6-Plainfield Street on and off-ramps to be shut down for part of the night. A line of cars ended up on the side of the road, stranded. Ramon Serrano said his car quit suddenly after he drove through four feet of water. "There was water up to here," he said, pointing inside the passenger area. "The car just stopped... It just shut off."
Rhode Island State Police monitored the scene on Rt. Six throughout the night, as cars tried to avoid the lakes forming on the side of the road.
On Rt. 10, DOT worker Hector Rivera had a wet job; he spent the evening trying to unclog the drains and clear basin grates.
The windy weather is also being blamed tonight for damage at an old mill building on Ashburton Street. Part of the roof blew off. The damage was minor, and nobody was hurt. The street is shut down for the rest of the night as workers try to secure what's left.
Some homes did lose power briefly; about eight hundred at peak, most in Scituate and East Providence; a couple hundred in Southeastern Massachusetts as well.
