PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Providence police cruisers chased a driver down Smith Street Thursday night before calling off the pursuit, officers said.

Police said the driver pulled over twice, but sped away when the officers stepped out of their cruisers. The suspect fled down North Main Street, and police said they were forced to call off the chase because of high speeds.

Police would not say Thursday night why they were pursuing the supect, but said they had a license plate number.
