PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI/AP) - Rhode Island House lawmakers have approved a bill banning indoor prostitution.
A spokesperson confirmed Wednesday night that the bill passed by a vote of 58 to nine. The legislation closes a loophole in state law, which allows people to pay for sex indoors. Right now, prostitution is legal only in Rhode Island and parts of Nevada.
The legislation makes prostitution a misdemeanor crime, with a maximum punishment of one year in prison.
The senate is expected to vote on the bill Thursday.
Another bill approved Wednesday would require elections to select interim U.S. senators instead of allowing the governor to select a temporary replacement.
