PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Providence Firefighters have rejected a final contract offer from the city ahead of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, according to a statement from Mayor David Cicilline Thursday night.
The conference is scheduled to begin Friday, and firefighters plan to start picketing in the morning. They have been locked in a contract dispute with the city for years. Vice President Joe Biden, along with other Federal officials, have canceled their planned appearances, saying they will not cross a picket line.
Several other groups are planning demonstrations this weekend. Mayor Cicilline has asked them to register with the city, and hold their protests in designated areas.
Several people, including three Providence City Councilors, are criticizing the registration as a violation of free speech rights. Mayor Cicilline says it will help manage resources, and ensure the safety of demonstrators.
