PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Former Senator Lincoln Chafee is reiterating his intention to
run for Governor,
one
day after announcing it on a national television show.
"My comments regarding my candidacy for Rhode Island
governor, were based on the positive feedback I have received thus
far in my exploratory campaign," Chafee said. "My intentions are to
run for Governor."
Chafee also added, "Senator Specter's announcement to leave the Republican Party only served to reinforce that my decision to leave the party in 2007 was the right one."
Chafee said he is planning to run for Governor as an independent candidate. Right now, he's a Visiting Fellow at the Watson Institute at Brown University. Once his commitments there are done Chafee said he will make a formal announcement about the governor's race.
Other potential candidates for governor include Democrats
Lieutenant
Governor Elizabeth Roberts,
State
Treasurer Frank Caprio and Attorney General Patrick
Lynch. Republican State Representative Joe Trillo may also
run.
