PORTSMOUTH/TIVERTON, R.I. (WPRI) - A major milestone Friday for the new Sakonnet River Bridge. A groundbreaking is planned for the afternoon.
Rhode Island officials have awarded a contract worth nearly $164 million to the Cardi Corporation of Warwick to build the new bridge. Cardi was the lowest bidder for the project.
The new bridge, connecting Portsmouth and Tiverton, is expected to be open to traffic in 2012, but state transportation officials say the company could be rewarded if the span's finished early.
Once the new bridge is built, the existing 53-year-old bridge will be torn down.
