PD investigating coffee table death

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Police are investigating after an 11-year-old girl bled to death from crashing through a glass coffee table in her family's Providence apartment.

Christiana Sarty and her 8-year-old sister were home alone in their Elmwood neighborhood apartment when Christiana either fell or jumped through the table early Thursday evening.

A shard of glass punctured her leg. She bled profusely and died a short while later at Hasbro Children's Hospital.

It was unclear Friday where the girls' mother was when the accident occurred. A police official said she was too distraught to provide details to detectives, who need more information before deciding if criminal charges are warranted.

The 8-year-old was taken into custody by the state's child welfare agency for physical and emotional evaluation.
