PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) - Police in Pawtucket bust a couple with a pit bull.
The breed is banned in that community so the couple was found violating the city ordinance.
Pawtucket animal control officers seized the dog from the family's home on Tuesday.
They found the dog while responding to a domestic disturbance.
Animal Control Officer, John Holmes says "You don't want to have a house full of fighting people and then get this dog or any dog worked up. It could turn in to a dangerous situation."
But investigators say what made the situation truly dangerous, the pit bull was in the same room as a newborn baby.
During an argument between the couple, the dog allegedly got a little too close and the couple locked him in a bedroom.
Had they not, animal control says it could have been worse, "Some animals get jealous when a newborn is brought into a house. so you have to be very very careful."
Police say the couple is new to the area and may be unaware of the city's pit bull ban.
The owners were cited with owning and keeping a pit bull in Pawtucket, they are also to appear in court on charges of failing to have the dog liscenced, insured, and vaccinated.
