WASHINGTON (WPRI) - Calling his recovery a lifelong process, U.S. Congressman Patrick Kennedy announced Friday he has checked himself into a medical facility.

Kennedy is seeking treatment for an unnamed condition. The Rhode Island democrat has struggled with addiction and depression for much of his life. He is the son of U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass), who is currently being treated for brain cancer.

Rep. Kennedy's close friends say the decision to enter treatment was not caused by an accident or any legal trouble. They also expect him to be away from Washington for several weeks, possibly returning later this summer.

“I have always said that recovery is a life-long process and that I will do whatever it takes to preserve my health," Kennedy said in a statement released Friday morning. "In consultation with my doctor, I have decided to temporarily step away from my normal routine to ensure that I am being as vigilant as possible in my recovery."

Kennedy went into rehab for alcohol and drug addiction, following a car crash three years ago. He crashed his car on Capitol Hill in May 2006.

Bill Lynch, chairman of Rhode Island's Democratic Party, commended Kennedy's actions.

"I'm confident Patrick will return with energy and dedication that has made him a leader for Rhode Island and a fighter for his constituents in the first Congressional district," Lynch said.
