NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) - The Rhode Island Department of Health has released the official cause of death for Naomi McCoy, the 6-week-old baby who died last week at Hasbro Children's Hospital.

According to the agency, McCoy died from "fatal child abuse syndrome, with blunt impact injuries of head, torso and extremities."

The child's father, Rachin McCoy, 21, is accused his daughter's death. He was initially charged with first-degree child abuse. However, those charges will be officially upgraded to murder Tuesday in Newport County District Court.

Rachin McCoy's family said there is no way he could have committed the crime.

"My son didn't do this," said Lori Moody, McCoy's mother. "Anybody that knows my son, knows my son did not do this. It wasn't in his type of heart so right now we have to stay strong and focus until the truth comes out."
