NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) - Two Newport police officers are being credited for pulling 8
people from a home that is about to go up in flames.
Fast-moving flames from a burning motorcycle and car - melted
the side of 5 Wellington Avenue early Sunday morning spreading so
fast the residents inside didn't know their home was on fire.
Officers Mary Scott and Eric Barden were the first responders
on scene. They dodged heavy smoke to locate a partially blind man
in the kitchen. The officers helped him out of the house and ran
back in to rescue his wife.
As the fire spread quickly towards the house, the officers
made one final attempt, clearing the six people still inside.
Newport firefighters arrived shortly after, extinguishing the
blaze. No one was seriously injured in the fire, thanks to the
fast-acting rescuers.
Police say they do have suspects in the arson and are
currently searching for them. The eight victims were not hurt.
