NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) - As a six-week-old baby lies in a bed at Hasbro Children's Hospital in critical condition, her father sits in a jail cell held without bail.

The little girl was taken to the hospital Tuesday night with skull and rib fractures, said Sgt. John Barker of the Newport Police Department.

The child's father, Rashin McCoy, 21, was arraigned Wednesday morning at Newport District court on first -degree child abuse. He was held on $500,000 bail for that charge, but held without bail for a probation violation on a previous assault charge.

Hospital staff contacted police after the baby was brought in. Investigators arrested him at Hasbro Children's Hospital after interviewing him.

According to investigators, McCoy claimed the baby was hurt falling when she fell off the couch. However, Barker said the injuries didn't match the story. Investigators are still trying to figure out how the injuries occurred.
