NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI/AP) - The fate of a commuter rail project between New Bedford and Boston is hanging in the balance.

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick promised the $1.4 billion project two years ago. State Treasurer Timothy Cahill is cautioning against the plans. Cahill says that with state revenues plunging, Massachusetts cannot afford a major transportation project.

South Coast Rail Manager Kristina Egan says since construction isn't expected to begin until 2012, the government has the time to get the money together.

The Patrick administration says it is forging ahead with the plans, and hopes to lock in the funds before the scheduled start date.
