PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Providence takes the first step toward overturning a controversial state law.

Mayor David Cicilline has signed an executive order allowing the city to punish any adult entertainment establishment that employs anyone who's under the age of 18, or that allows a minor to perform on stage.

The mayor says the executive order creates a tool that can be used immediately to protect minors, while state-wide legislation is in the works.

“Exploiting minors is totally reprehensible and the loophole that allows it must be closed immediately,” said Mayor David Cicilline.

Establishments will be fined $500 dollars for the first offense, and $1,000 dollars for each following offense. On Friday, Providence City Councilman Michael Solomon submitted the legislation to close the loophole.

A special meeting will be held Monday, July 27th at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers to discuss the ordinance.
