Twin River to suspend dog racing

Move comes in preparation for possible bankruptcy

LINCOLN, R.I. (WPRI) - In preparation for possible bankruptcy, Twin River has informed the state is plans to suspend dog racing at the casino for the remainder of the year, according to spokeswoman Patti Doyle.

The races will end May 31, according to a letter to the Department of Business Regulation from BLB, Twin River's parent company.

"As of May 31, 2009, Twin River will have run its legally-mandated 124 racing dates for year 2009," the letter stated.

Doyle said about 40 workers would lose their jobs when the greyhound racing shuts down.

The state was considering a possible takeover of the troubled gaming facility. However, talks broke down last week after lawmakers decided it would be unwise to take on the facility's debt.

The Rhode Island Greyhound Owners Association released the following statement in response to Twin River's plans to suspend dog racing:

"The Rhode Island Greyhound Owners Association is disappointed to learn that Twin River submitted a letter today to the Department of Business Regulation requesting permission to suspend greyhound racing as of May 31, 2009,” said Jennifer Bramley, spokesperson for RIGOA.

“Greyhound racing is a Rhode Island tradition and a significant contributor to the state’s economy, providing nearly 225 well-paying jobs and significant tax and fee revenue to the state of Rhode Island and the town of Lincoln. The Rhode Island Greyhound Owners Association believes this action to be unreasonable and at this time has received no formal contact regarding the proposed suspension."

“RIGOA is in under contract with BLB Investors and will be reviewing options to address this matter.”
