PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A lawyer for Providence Mayor David Cicilline is asking a judge to hold a new hearing on the partial pension awarded to a former city official convicted of corruption.
Frank Corrente, a former top aide to ex-Providence Mayor Vincent “Buddy” Cianci, was awarded a partial pension by the city retirement board last year. He was convicted of corruption in 2002 after being caught on FBI surveillance tape accepting a cash bribe.
Cicilline, who succeeded Cianci, is challenging the board’s decision.
His attorney, Kelly Sheridan, told Superior Court Judge Michael Silverstein Wednesday that the board’s decision should be considered a recommendation and is subject to court review.
Sheridan requested a new hearing. Silverstein did not indicate
when he would rule.
