PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - The Rhode Island Department of Transportation is closing lanes on Interstate 95 this week to prepare for a major highway change.
On Saturday, workers will open a new Exit 20 on the right side of I-95 south to replace the old exit, which was on the left.
This week, highway lanes will be closed for the installations of new overhead signs.
The changes are part of the state's Iway relocation project, an ongoing $610 million initiative that reconfigures highway traffic in and around downtown Providence.
Exits from I-195 downtown and at Wickenden Street also will be closed Saturday. Traffic is expected to become congested on Route 95 south and some downtown streets.
