South Kingstown, RI (AP) - South Kingstown, RI (AP) - Hundreds of mourners attended a memorial service for a volunteer firefighter in South Kingstown who died in an accident at the fire station.
Firefighters from around New England and New York gathered at the University of Rhode Island on Saturday to pay respects to 67-year-old Allan “Pickles” LePage.
LePage was remembered as a “fireman’s fireman” who seemed grumpy at first, but was a beloved mentor to younger firefighters.
LePage, a volunteer for 42 years, died Tuesday after suffering a major head injury a day earlier at the Kingstown Fire District station.
Officials say the accident is under investigation, but that LePage was found bleeding heavily in the bucket of a fire truck’s ladder tower.
